Huis de Bruyn, Schiedam

In 1987 we were commissioned to restore this Dutch Functionalist style house, named after its first owner. The villa was designed and built from 1929 to 1931 by the firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt for Mr. De Bruyn, one of the managing clerks of the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam-Overschie. The De Bruyn house was declared a listed national monument in 1986. That same year the villa was purchased by the family Beins-Den Hertog, enthusiasts of modern architecture and collectors of art. The house became the first listed monument of Brinkman & Van der Vlugt that we were asked to restore. Its restoration included a pioneering study and research on the usage of color in Dutch Functionalist interiors.

The villa has a full basement floor which raises the ground floor and creates a sort pedestal finished with a plinth course of black tiles. Blue azure colored tiles are used for the surfaces of the exterior terraces and black tiles are used for the front entrance stoop. At the ground floor along the north façade lies a narrow annex with a side entrance, wardrobe and toilets. The living- and working quarters, the dining room and kitchen are located around a central staircase. On the second floor are three bedrooms and servant rooms. The third floor has a servant room and storage space as well as a ‘glass room’ adjacent to the roof terrace, which was originally meant as a billiard room. The house has large steel framed windows and doors at the various terraces and entrance stoops, thus opening itself, especially along the south-façade, to the adjoining garden. During the intensive, almost archaeological research preceding the restoration, the original color scheme was almost completely reconstructed. Based on this color scheme, the original colors and materials were re-introduced in several rooms, while the kitchen, the sanitary and the interior of the living quarters were adapted to meet the more actual requirements of the owners. This was possible while preserving a lot of the original materials, details en colors. The corridors, servant rooms and children rooms remained authentic.
